Cherries

Apart from the vines which were dry crops, the inhabitants of Gerakies were also engaged in fruit growing, mainly with cherry orchards, hence the famous cherries of Gerakies. The microclimate of the area favored the production of cherries, so the excellent quality and taste became known throughout the Cypriot market. The season of cherry blossom always coincides with the great holiday of Orthodoxy, Easter-Resurrection. During this period, the beauty of the area attracts visitors from all over Cyprus and abroad. In the months of May and June, when the cherries ripen, the traffic in the area increases even more. Young and old alike seek to taste and buy the famous cherries. In addition, a small harvest makes cherry growers especially happy and significantly boosts the finances of those who choose to engage in this particular branch of the primary sector. It is a great struggle for the producer himself to succeed in selling his fruit directly to the consumer, without possibly shrewd middlemen, who often steal the efforts of the producers.
